CPCS A04 Tower Crane

What is the course?

This CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) A04 Tower Crane course equips you with the skills and understanding required for safe and efficient operation of tower cranes. Training is provided using classroom and practical instruction to enable you to qualify for your construction industry recognised operator card.

Course Content

Our course provides the knowledge and practical training you need to ensure safe and productive tower crane operation and covers:

  • Understanding the capabilities of a crane and safety precautions required
  • Understanding statutory regulations and legal responsibilities relating to lifting equipment
  • Responding to recognised signals used when controlling a crane
  • Operating safe-load indicators and warning devices
  • Understanding the maintenance and adjustments of equipment
  • The effects of working radius and the lifting capacity of a tower
  • Ascertaining safe loading levels and capacity of a crane
  • Safe slinging, lifting gear and securely balancing the load
  • Counterweights, working radius and shock loading

How is the Course Taught and Assessed?

This CPCS A04 Tower Crane course is taught through a combination of practical work and theory. Assessment is by both practical and theory tests.

Who Should Take This Course?

Our tower crane course is suitable both for those who have received no formal training on tower crane operation and existing operators looking for a course that will refresh your skills and knowledge.

Two different endorsements are taught, specific to the type of machinery in operation:

  • A04A: Trolley Jib
  • A04B: Luffing Jib

What Qualification Will I Receive?

Following successful completion of this course, trainees receive certification from the CITB National Construction College. The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is awarded once CPCS technical tests have been successfully completed.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must have passed a CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test no more than two years before your course date. You also need a good understanding of both written and spoken English, and must be comfortable working at height.

What Can I Do Next?

Successful completion of the CPCS A04 Tower Crane course makes you eligible to progress to the Slinger/Signaller course, Crane Supervisor course, Appointed Person course, or study for the CPCS Blue Competent Operator card.
