IPAF Mobile Vertical/Mobile Boom Operator (3a+3b)

What is the course?

The IPAF Mobile Vertical/Mobile Boom Operator (3a + 3b) course is intended for persons who operate, manage or supervise the use of powered access. The powered access dealt with on the course consists of:

  • Aerial work platforms
  • Scissor lifts
  • Self-propelled boom lifts
  • Trailer mounted boom lifts

Course content

  • The following components are included in the course:
  • MEWP classifications
  • Structural components
  • Hazards
  • Pre-use inspections and handovers
  • Safe operating procedures
  • General regulations – ISO 18878, European, HASAWA, MHSW
  • Specific regulations – PUWER, LOLER, WAHR
  • RIDDOR and Accident reporting

How is the course taught and assessed?

This one-day course for IPAF Mobile Vertical/Mobile Boom Operator (3a + 3b) begins with an overview introduction and a pre-course theory assessment. In addition to the theory exercises and practical instruction, the course concludes with a practical assessment and theory test.

What qualification will I receive?

Upon successful completion of the course for IPAF Mobile Vertical/Mobile Boom Operator (3a + 3b). the candidate will receive an IPAF Certificate plus an IPAF Smart Powered Access Licence (PAL) Card. (This PAL card will be valid for 5 years). Should you already hold a valid PAL Card, the Mobile Vertical (3a) and Mobile Boom (3b) classifications will be included with your PAL card and the expiration date of the card will be unchanged.

What can I do next?

Upon receiving your certification for the Mobile Vertical and Mobile Boom you are able to upgrade to a PAL+ Card by undertaking the IPAF Advanced Course, intended for operators working in challenging and higher risk environments.
