The CSCS Health and Safety Test is a compulsory part of acquiring a CSCS Card. The CSCS Test was put in place to ensure that CSCS cardholders have a good understanding of the health and safety knowledge required to work safely on site and to ensure that they are able to recognise and manage on site health and safety risks and hazards.
If you fail the CSCS Health and Safety test then you will be ineligible for a CSCS card. It is possible to re-sit the test but if you revise before hand there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to pass first time.
The CSCS Test
The CSCS test is a multiple-choice exam that is taken on a PC at an accredited test centre or mobile a mobile testing unit. Depending upon the type of test you take you will be faced with 50 multiple-choice questions.
When you have booked your test you should receive a letter through the post explaining the type/category of CSCS test you are going to take and when and where your test will take place.
Revise the Correct CSCS Test Content
There are 3 basic types of CSCS Test:
• The Construction Skills Health and Safety Test
• The Supervisor Health and Safety Test
• The Managerial and Professional Health and Safety Test.
Most CSCS card applicants will take the Construction Skills Health and Safety Test. This CSCS test has 13 sections that cover five sectors, General Responsibilities, Working at Height, Operative, Highways and Lift and Escalator. The test will be made up of 50 multiple choice questions taken from several of the 13 test sections and you will have 45 minutes to complete the test.
The content of the test you take will depend upon your occupation therefore you will not need to revise all thirteen sections of the test; instead you will need to identify the sections which relate to your job role and concentrate on revising for them. For example if you are a scaffolder you should expect to answer questions from the Working at Height Health and Safety Test and if you are a Highways Maintenance Operative you will be answering questions from the Highways Health and Safety Test. All tests will include questions from the General Responsibilities section.
If you have any doubts about which test sections you need to revise contact your training provider.
The CSCS Supervisor Health and Safety Test will also feature questions from the 13 test sections but in addition you will be required to answer questions that relate directly to construction supervisory responsibilities. This test will be made up of 50 multiple choice questions and you will have 45 minutes to complete the test.
For candidates taking the CSCS Managerial and Professional (MAP) Health and Safety Test the content is a little different. The CSCS MAP test is an advanced level test aimed at construction managers and highly experienced construction professionals, therefore the questions will relate directly to the managerial responsibilities of a construction manager.
There are separate revision materials available for the CSCS MAP test as the content is specific and does not include questions from the other CSCS Health and Safety Tests. The MAP test will be made up of 50 multiple choice questions and you will have 45 minutes to complete the test.
