The Different Types of CSCS Test

Types Health Safety TestIf you are applying for a CSCS Card or an Affiliate CSCS Card you will need to pass the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test before you can acquire the card. There are a number of different types of CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test available and the one you take will depend upon your construction occupation, your construction qualifications and the type of CSCS or Affiliate card you are applying for.

The CSCS Construction Skills Health, Safety & Environment Test

The most common CSCS Test is the Construction Skills Health, Safety & Environment Test. This test covers a wide variety of occupations and relates to the acquisition of the Blue Craft CSCS Card, the Green Construction Site Operative CSCS Card, the Red Trainee and Experienced Worker CSCS Cards, the White/Grey Construction Related Occupations CSCS Card and the Gold Advanced Craft CSCS Card.

The Construction Skills Health, Safety & Environment Test is made up of 35 multiple choice questions and candidates will have 45 minutes to complete the test using a touch screen computer.

The contents of the CSCS Construction Skills Health, Safety & Environment Test includes a compulsory section on general health and safety called General Responsibilities, in addition to this section you will complete exam content that covers one of the following tests:

• Operative Health, Safety & Environment Test
• Working at Heights Health, Safety & Environment Test
• Highways Health, Safety & Environment Test
• Lift and Escalator Health, Safety & Environment Test

You will not be required to revise all sections of the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test content; instead you should focus on the section(s) that relates directly to your construction occupation. For example if you are a roofer you should expect to answer questions from the Working at Heights Health, Safety & Environment Test and if you are a Road Builder you will be answering questions from the Highways Health, Safety & Environment Test.

There are multiple revision materials available for the Construction Skills Health, Safety & Environment Test including a book, a DVD Rom.

The CSCS Supervisor Health, Safety & Environment Test

Candidates who are employed in a supervisory construction occupation will need to apply for the Gold Supervisor CSCS Card and therefore will need to take the CSCS Supervisor Health, Safety & Environment Test.

The Supervisor Health, Safety & Environment Test is made up of 50 multiple choice questions and candidates will have 45 minutes to complete the test using a touch screen computer. The content of the Supervisor test will focus on the health and safety responsibilities of a supervisor working in a construction related occupation and it might also include exam questions relating to the supervisors job role.

For example a Lift Engineer Supervisor may be expected to answer some of the questions from the Lift and Escalator Health, Safety & Environment Test section or a Plant and Equipment Supervisor may come across questions from the Operative Health, Safety & Environment Test section.

Typical CSCS Construction Occupations covered by the CSCS Supervisor Health, Safety & Environment Test include:

• Site Supervisor
• Surveying Assistant
• Civil Engineering Supervisor
• Plant and Equipment Supervisor
• Highways Maintenance Supervisor

Revision content for the CSCS Supervisory Health, Safety & Environment Test is included in the standard CSCS Construction Skills Health, Safety & Environment Test revision books and DVD’s.

The Managerial and Professional Health, Safety & Environment Test

CSCS TestCandidates who are employed in a managerial construction occupation will need to apply for the Manager Black CSCS Card and therefore will need to take the Managerial and Professional Health, Safety & Environment Test (MAP test).

In some instances candidates who are applying for the White/Yellow CSCS Card Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) may also be required to sit the MAP test but this is dependent upon the individuals construction occupation.

The MAP Health, Safety & Environment Test is made up of 50 multiple choice questions and candidates will have 45 minutes to complete the test using a touch screen computer. The content of the MAP test will focus on the health and safety responsibilities of a manager working in a construction related occupation. Typical CSCS Construction Occupations covered by the CSCS MAP test include:

• Conservator
• Building Control Officer
• Building Services Engineer
• Site Manager
• Project Manager
• Quantity Surveyor
• Civil Engineering Manager
• Health and Safety Manager

There are separate revision materials available specifically for the MAP test in the form of a book and a DVD Rom.
